Return to Maine Collection: Classic long-sleeve tee

IMG_8468.jpeg

The first sewing pattern in the Return to Maine Collection is an essential piece of any wardrobe: a classic long-sleeve knit tee. This top is designed to be worn alone or under a sweater or cardigan (both pieces that are coming as part of the Collection!). Sewn in a rib knit fabric, the pattern easily achieves a perfect fit, as the fabric both clings and drapes, creating a flattering, easy-to-wear look.

I designed the first three samples in warm neutral colors: bone white, heavy cream, and mocha. The rib knit is 1x1 (bone white) or 2x2 (heavy cream and mocha). The neckline is finished with a bias binding, while the bottom and sleeves are hemmed. The fit is designed to fit just tightly enough to easily slide under a sweater or jacket, but loose enough to drape flatteringly to mid-hip. The wider neck allows the neckline to lay smoothly and the shoulders to fit snugly without binding under the arms.

Next, I experimented with a variety of other knit fabrics, including french terry (in saffron, left), waffle knit, jersey knit, and stretch fleece (in charcoal heather, right). I love how the same pattern is completely reinterpreted when sewn up in different colors and fabrics. The thicker knits were snug and cozy, without sacrificing fit or style. I also sewed a short-sleeve sample in a thinner jersey knit (in raisin, below), which would be perfect as a summer top or an under layer.

Most of the rib knits were sourced from Oak Fabrics, and the remaining knits were sourced from Blackbird Fabrics. All samples were sewn in size Medium. The pattern can be purchased directly from By Hand Serial. Stay tuned for more photos of how I incorporate this essential piece into my everyday wardrobe, and how it pairs with the rest of the Return to Maine Collection!
