Seafolk shawls
These wraps are intended for a small shop at Seafolk Coffeehouse:
Undyed silk:
Warp and weft: Raw bureta silk yarn from Ukraine (3280 yds on the cone)
8 EPI
34” on loom
272 ends
125” warp
Finished size: 28 1/2” x 86 1/2”
I wanted an open sett for drape, but this was too open; I had to go with plain weave (I’d wanted to try twill) and use doubled threads for the weft. I used one shot of indigo cotton on either end, just for a little dash of color. Size and drape came out nice, but next time I would go to at least 12 EPI. Also, multiple warp threads broke - especially on the right outer edge. Next time, I would use a few cotton threads on the outer edges (or at least double up the outer threads in the reed and the heddle).
Quite a lot left on the cone - possibly enough for another shawl, certainly enough for either just the warp or weft for another shawl.
Caramel silk:
Warp and weft: Tsugumi silk yarn (400g cone)
12 EPI
34” warp
408 ends + double on 2 outer ends each side = 412 ends
125” warp
Twill draft (threaded 1-2-3-4 and treadled 1-2-3-4-3-2)
Finished size: 25” x 81”
Notes: A lot left on the cone - probably enough for another shawl. Do NOT use this thread as a warp again - I had to wind on the warp without a tensioning device because the threads were so sticky. I was able to get good tension, but not something I’d like to do again. This was a good sett for this thread, and it would work well as weft.
