exploring maine: vinalhaven

A day trip on the ferry out of Rockland to explore Vinalhaven. The crossing was a calm, beautiful morning, with dolphins jumping off the bow of the ferry, and a curious seal checking us out as we passed by.

From the ferry terminal, I walked toward town, stopping at Seas Bakery for a blueberry muffin and a doughnut (both of which were unfortunately really lousy - dry with almost no taste to speak of). I continued walking through town (not a lot to look at, to be honest, and no stops or restaurants that looked like they’d be worth checking out), on to Lane’s Island Preserve, where I spent the morning exploring the trails and climbing on the boulders at the water’s edge.

My final spot on the way back to the ferry was Marsten House - a treasure trove of found objects from the south of France, including piles of lovely heritage textiles. The store wasn’t open yet, but I called the “call for appointment” number and Jackie graciously opened up for me and kept me company while I wandered through the wares. I walked away with two gorgeous indigo linen heirloom blankets.
