weaving: linen rugs

Weft – 1 1/2” linen duvet cover strips

Warp – 114” warp in 8/2 cottolin in beige (I doubled the strands, both in the reed and in the heddles)

EPI": 6 (1-1-1-0 on 8-reed)

264 ends (double-threaded)

Tabby structure

22 inches wide in the loom

Finished: two rugs, each 20” wide (one 36” long and one 34” long)

I used an old linen duvet cover, torn into 1 1/2” strips, to weave two linen rugs for the bedroom and bathroom. The duvet cover was a queen size, and I think I could probably get one more similarly sized rug out of the remaining strips.

UPDATE: I wove several more linen rugs, as follows:
Warp - #9 seine twine
Weft - natural undyed linen fabric - 3 yards x 57” width (washed and torn into 1 1/2” strips)
EPI - 4
Width on loom - 26”
104 ends
120” warp

My goal was to weave two 24” x 36” mats. I lost an additional inch on the width (total of 3” draw-in). The first mat I measured at 36”, but final length was 33” (3” take-up).

Finishing: overhand knot four ends together, push knot down to edge of mat (no hemstitch)

Final measurements: 23” x 23” mat and 23” x 33” mat

I ran out of linen strips, so I would adjust the measurements as follows next time, to achieve two mats 20” wide x 30” long:
* 23” width on loom
* weave each mat to 33” long on loom
* or, buy an additional yard (if I want to maintain original sizing of 24” x 36”)

Notes:
* warping twine worked well, but I could have used a lighter weight (perhaps #12 seine twine)
* next time, leave at least 10” between the two mats (I didn’t have enough length this time for overhand knots)
* next time, weave 1/2” header and footer for each mat with natural cottolin
