Terra Dress

This is my version of the Terra Dress, a new pattern created by Vivian Shao Chen for By Hand Serial Lookbook #15. It is sewn in sandblasted cotton, purchased at Blackbird Fabrics. I love the feel of the fabric - almost like a silk noil.

I sewed size Medium, which was true to my size, but due to the oversized nature of the design, I think that next time I would sew a Small - or even an Extra Small. I adjusted the pockets lower, to be more in line with where my hands drop, and I sewed the side slits lower than the pattern called for.

I’m not sure how I feel about this style of dress; it is definitely comfortable, and it fits and hangs well, but the shapeless nature of the fit makes me question whether it’s really flattering to my body type and size. It’s also really hard to capture in photos because it looks much better dynamically, when it’s in motion, instead of a static portrait style.
