sashiko stitch rice bags
Pattern: Modern Japanese rice bag
Fabrics: Vintage Japanese and other indigo remnants
Stitching: Hand embroidered with sashiko thread
Drawstrings: Experimented with various from Fiddlehead Artisan Supply
Notes: Added fusible interfacing to lining pieces, sewed both pattern size and upsized to 7” square bag w/ 8” square bottom (placed tabs from left edge as follows: 3 1/2”, 10 1/2”, 17 1/2”, 24 1/2”)
I sewed several other versions, including the red and white quilted version (made from remnants of an upcycled 19th Century handsewn quilt purchased at a Field & Supply market) and Midori green vintage silk (purchased from Brooklyn Haberdashery).
