biking on islesboro

I caught the Isleboro ferry around 10am - an easy trip, no reservations required when you’re not trying to bring a car over. The weather was beautiful, although the wind was really blowing, which cooled it down a bit, especially on the ferry. I bought my round-trip ticket and lined up on the loading dock; the ferry runs every hour on the hour, so I just got there when I got there, and jumped on the next trip.

It’s only a 20-minute crossing - just enough time to admire the views and watch the lighthouse appear as you get closer to the Islesboro ferry dock.

I headed south, toward Dark Harbor, and rode Pendleton Point Rd all the way to the southern tip. I had the Town Beach all to myself, and it was the perfect stopping point for a morning snack.

I headed back up the island, this time riding on East Shore Drive. It was a dirt road, hilly in places, but completely untrafficked and providing awesome views off the east shore of the island (hence the name). It finally dead-ended into private property, but I cut through the Maple Grove Cemetery and popped back up on the main road. From there, I road north through the narrows, to the northern half of the island, and turned around at Big Tree Beach - I’ll have to save the northern half for the next trip.

I rode West Bay Road back to the ferry dock, arriving just before the half hour and in perfect time to grab the next ferry back to the mainland.
