august in norway

First stop was Bergen, where we rode the funicular for a birds eye view of the city, wandered the narrow streets, and found a great coffee shop and the best hot chocolate.

Next up, a week in the fjords, starting with a gondola ride above Voss, a stay at a farmhouse inn (complete with local hedgehog!), a bike ride past rainbow-splashed waterfalls to a gourmet picnic lunch and then to a ferry ride down the fjord to a grand old Norway hotel. We hiked the monks steps to an epic viewpoint, took a boat to a cider tasting, went kayaking, and caught a ferry on our bikes to spend the day riding on a bucolic island.

After a quick return to Bergen, I flew through Bodo to the Lofoten Islands, for a week of epic hiking, including peaks above Haukland Beach and Kvalvika Beach, a trek to a hidden lake up in the mountains, and a last-day sunrise hike up the Reinebringen’s 1978 monks steps to a view over Reine and beyond.

The view driving into Nusfjord

Two nights at Nusfjord Arctic Lodge in lovely little red fishermens’ cottages, called rorbuers.

Hiking the fishermens’ trail from Nusfjord, and celebrating a hard day’s hike with a delicious pizza at the Lodge.

We hiked to a hidden lake, not a single other person seen the entire hike!

Any finally, Reinebringen:

On the final day, we stopped at the Lofotens’ best bakery before hopping a ferry to Bodo, and then a flight over coastline to Bodo.
